Since Ohio American Water (OAW) bought up utilities across the state in 2002, the company has requested frequent, exorbitant rate increases. The latest rate case, filed just five months after their last increase, requests an overall water service rate increase of 60 percent over four years. If awarded, OAW will have increased its overall rates 325 percent since it initiated service here seven years ago.

OAW’s parent company, American Water, has a history of systematically raising rates for many of its customers in the 32 states in which it owns water companies. The company claims that it is simply recovering costs invested in the system, but earnings reports make it clear that ratepayers are bearing the full of improvements while American Water is lining the pockets of its shareholders.

Many Ohioans struggle to make ends meet and provide for their families in this economy. We cannot sit idly by while OAW continues to raise our rates at such excessive levels that our budgets are strained, our homes lose value, and businesses struggle to survive here.

Join us in communicating to the Public Utility Commission of Ohio (PUCO) that OAW’s rate increases must stop if our communities are going to survive. We are a relatively small customer base, but together we can have a large voice.
